What does the recently published directive on energy efficiency say?

Que di a directiva de eficiencia enerxética recentemente publicada?

On 13 September, the European Unions published Directive (EU) 2023/1791 on energy efficiency, triggering a series of debates on its applications.

Below we clarify the main doubts that have arisen over this publication.

The Directive does not ban gas boilers

The Directive in no way prohibits the use of gas boilers, nor does it require gas boilers to be replaced by heat pumps. In fact, the European directive recommends replacing the most polluting heating equipment for other types.

Customers will be free to choose the best energy solution for their home, and decide on the best investment/savings/efficiency ratio for them. There are a wide range of climatic zones in Spain so there is no single optimum solution for all of them or every type of dwelling. The population will not be forced to bear an unnecessary financial burden.

What the European Directive says in relation to gas is that, from 2024 onwards, its installation will not officially count as energy savings. In no case does it prohibit the use and replacement of boilers, regardless of the nature of their fuel.

In new buildings, developers may provide for the most efficient air-conditioning and heating system without restriction. Currently, developers and builders nationwide have already incorporated hybrid solutions in their new developments that contemplate the use of gas and electricity, so that the customer can choose the most efficient technology at any given time. These new building solutions using gas appliances comply with the Technical Building Code (CTE).

Renewable gas makes more sense than ever.

Renewable gas is now a reality Customers who have natural gas appliances will be able to continue using them with renewable gases, biomethane or hydrogen, without having to adapt in any way.

There are currently six operating biomethane plants injecting renewable gas into the Nedgia networks, and an additional portfolio of over 200 projects to cover customers’ energy demands

To sum up

  • Gas boilers can continue to be installed.
  • Customers do not have to stop enjoying gas.
  • The use of gas is allowed when replacing equipment as well as in new build.
  • Renewable gas is now a reality
