AEDAS Homes and Naturgy join forces for the first time to promote the use of renewable gas in housing developments in Spain

AEDAS Homes e Naturgy únense para impulsar o uso de gas renovable en promocións de vivendas por primeira vez en España

The property developer has signed an agreement with Nedgia, the Naturgy group gas distribution subsidiary, to install adapted systems to supply biomethane to around 500 homes under development.

  • Luis García Malo de Molina, Director of Operations at AEDAS Homes: “With this agreement, the company is taking a giant step towards respecting the environment by using biomethane as a renewable energy and promoting the circular economy”.
  • Vicente Gramuntell, Director of Operations at Nedgia: “This agreement is a clear indication of Nedgia’s commitment to decarbonisation, offering its distribution networks for solutions that promote sustainable energy development”.

AEDAS Homes, a leading housing promoter, and Nedgia, the Naturgy group gas distribution subsidiary, have joined forces to bring renewable gas to housing developments for the first time ever by installing certified adapted systems to supply biomethane. This initiative makes AEDAS Homes the first property development sector company to replace natural gas with biomethane in the residential market to test supply to installations.

Biomethane is a renewable gas obtained from organic waste. It has the same properties as natural gas, which means it can be transported via the existing gas networks and consumed in homes without having to modify supply installations. Spain currently has the third highest biomethane production potential in Europe, meaning that it could generate great wealth for the country as a whole and for the parts of Spain with a higher volume of waste.

“With this agreement to implement biomethane in developments for the provisional supply necessary to test installations, AEDAS Homes is taking another step towards being a benchmark for sustainability in the new-build housing sector and reducing the operational carbon footprint of its projects”, underlines Luis García Malo de Molina, Director of Operations at AEDAS Homes.

The property company is thereby setting a milestone in the new residential construction sector thanks to Nedgia by supplying gas to housing developments in Spain. “For the first time”, stresses Luis García Malo de Molina, “a developer is changing natural gas for biomethane, a clean, inexhaustible gas with neutral CO2 emissions that contributes to the fight against climate change and to fostering the circular economy; a giant step towards respecting the environment”.

This agreement is a clear example of the ambition of Nedgia and Naturgy group to decarbonise their distribution networks and become a benchmark in the search for energy solutions that promote sustainable energy development”, explains Vicente Gramuntell, Director of Operations at Nedgia.

The energy Group is playing a key role in rolling out biomethane through its 57,000 kilometres of network. In 2022, renewable gas flowing through Nedgia networks grew by 90%, to 35 GWh. “Biomethane offers the advantage of great flexibility as it is a gas comparable to natural gas, allowing us to leverage the extensive existing gas infrastructure, which reduces investment and adaptation efforts for rapid penetration”, adds Vicente Gramuntell.

Thanks to the new guarantees of origin -similar to existing guarantees for electricity produced with renewables-, each MWh of 100% renewable gas leads to the issuance of a guarantee of origin with information on where, when and how the gas was produced. These guarantees therefore provide an added value for marketing that promotes consumption based on the resulting environmental benefit.
